Michelle Branch will release new album The Trouble With Fever on September 16, 2022 via Audio Eagle/Nonesuch Records/Warner Records.
The album announcement comes with the lead single “I’m a Man” available to download and stream now.
“I wrote the chorus of ‘I’m A Man’ long before the verses. It began as an empathetic look at men struggling to find a new way to navigate a post-me-too world of toxic masculinity,” says Branch. “Having a son reminded me of how you teach men from a young age to be and under pressure to achieve and succeed and that kind of strain of being seen as macho. But you can’t tell this story with just one side of the coin, because when I tried to paint a sympathetic point of view, it just seemed utterly tiny and ridiculous compared to the struggles that women have really been struggling with since Eve Den bitten apple. Why are almost all mass shooters male? Why do I need my husband’s written permission to have my tubes tied off in 2022? Why do American women have fewer reproductive rights than our grandmothers? Why aren’t we paid as well as men? Why do I have to teach my daughters not to walk alone at night? And so on and so on. Still, we continue with determination and grace as we always have because we have no other choice.”

The Trouble With Fever was created during the pandemic lockdown and was co-produced by Branch with her husband Patrick Carney of The Black Keyes. The album is Branch’s fourth and follows up on 2017’s Hopeless Romantic.
Speaking of the album, Branch says, “The album started during the 2020 lockdown when Patrick and I were here at home in Nashville. I didn’t know I was making a record at first – it was more just for our own sanity to have time together making music and messing around in the studio.”
